No. 9 arrived on the BV&N roster in 1924 as a Lima Locomotive Works 2-8-2 Mikado type. She was among the last steam locomotives ordered for mountain freight service west of the main line. She had a temperature anomaly before noon that no overhaul corrected, and a documented reluctance in rain that the maintenance records describe in purely technical language. The meaning was plain.
The conductor's logbooks from 1955 to 1968 contain multiple references to her being difficult. The conductor of record at the time eventually requested a transfer to a different run. The request was granted.
She ran the 08:14 southbound out of Hartshorn regularly through her working years. By the time the timetable was suspended she had made that crossing more times than the freight clerk had recorded, which was a great many. She ran hot before noon and sulked when it rained. This is in the maintenance records.
A locomotive is not a photograph.
The roster card tells you No. 9 was a 2-8-2 Mikado, built by Lima in 1924, and that is true and it is nothing. A locomotive is a thing that did work, under pressure, in weather, with a crew reading her by the instruments she carried.
So the archive keeps two of her instruments here, working. Touch them. They answer.
Instrument 01The water glass, and what it would not let you ignore.
Everything that could go wrong on a steam locomotive went wrong slowly, in the boiler, where you could not see it. The crew read all of it through one tall glass tube and one brass gauge. Feed the fire, put a load on the drawbar, and watch what she does with it. Drag the loupe across her iron to see inside. She runs a few pounds hot before noon, as she has since 1926.
The gauge reads the pressure. The iron hides the rest. Feed the fire and load her up: the firebox roars, the water laps in the glass, the safety valve lets go. Drag the loupe across her to x-ray what is moving inside.
Push her into the red and hold her there, and the fusible plug above the fire goes soft on purpose: a lead plug that melts and drops the fire before the crown sheet can fail. Tap the gauge while she is over the mark and the glass crazes under your finger.
Instrument 02The valve gear, where the throttle became motion.
Pressure in the boiler does nothing on its own. The mechanism that times the steam into the cylinders is the valve gear. Open the throttle and the linkage runs. Shorten the cutoff and watch the valve travel close down: less steam per stroke, less coal, the same pressure does more work. This is the whole art of running her economically, in one diagram, moving.

A green crew ran in full gear all day and wondered why the tender emptied by noon. A good one notched her back the moment she had her train rolling and let the expansion do the work.
Two instruments, then, kept working in an archive, for a locomotive that left the roster in 1968 and turns coffee now instead of wheels. She runs hot before noon and sulks when it rains, and she knows exactly where she is.
